Omarchy is an Arch based Linux distribution created by DHH. Built on the Hyprland dynamic tiling window manager, Omarchy is all about speed and visual fluidity. It features a curated environment where everything—from window management to system updates—is accessible via powerful keybindings and a custom, terminal-inspired menu system.
It's obviously not something that everyone will love because it's built around minimalism and offers a keyboard-driven workflow, but there's some features that I'm sure every developers would be beneficent using.
- Stability : Unlike "bleeding edge" Arch, Omarchy uses a Stable Mirror system to ensure that updates are tested and won't break your desktop environment (Arch users will recognize themselves).
- Navigation and hotkeys : As said before, Omarchy is built around keyboard shortcut and fast and efficient navigation. You might struggle at first, but once mastered, it allows you to enter in a flow of productivity.
- Easy customization : Omarchy uses a consistent design language across the entire OS. You can download and select new themes with a few key presses and the whole entire system will adapt to these changes. You can also easily configure each and every element of you system (colorscheme, waybar, windows borders, shortcuts, etc.)
- TUI-Driven system management : Omarchy favors a Text User Interface (TUI) over traditional heavy GUI settings apps. I really like the way, it is though. By pressing "SUPER + Alt + Space", you open the central hub that allows you to manage system updates, install packages, and even change system themes.
I've been using Omarchy for 1 year and it's been a really pleasant experience I must say. For those who are afraid of Arch installation and configuration, but would like to embrace the Linux-ness of it all, Omarchy is a great option if you like terminal environment. The Omarchy manual is great, and allows to quickly get the hang of it.
